Why is Marijuana illegal today?

There is no doented Marijuana related death but there is doented medicinal value to Marijuana, such as Glaucoma and Chemotherapy Sickness Treatment. If legal, the government could tax it for revenues and the cost of fighting crime would save the tax payers. Just want to know what is the real reason for this prohibition.
